Dr. Sebastian Champappilly is an authority on the law applicable to Christians in India. He is a Post Graduate both in Law and Political Science, and he was awarded Ph.D Degree in Law, in 1996 by the Cochin University of Science & Technology for his thesis in Family Law. He has more than 36 years of standing at the Bar and is an Advocate of the High Court of Kerala since 1985. He has also been practicing in various other Courts in Kerala. He has to his credit several reported cases on various branches of law especially matters relating to matrimonial disputes like divorce, guardianship, custody of children, wills and Succession and various branches of Taxation Law, Service Law, Company Law and constitutional law and has rich experience in Private International Law and was appointed to the post of Special Government Pleader (Taxes) in the High Court of Kerala from 2011 to 2016. Currently, he is a practicing lawyer in the High Court of Kerala and other Courts in Kerala.
He has authored several books and Articles on law such as “The Christian Law”, “ The Law relating to Police in Kerala”, “Muslim Law”, “ Christian Law of Succession in India”, "Christian Law on Marriage, Adoption & Guardianship" and “Christian Law on Divorce” and they have all been well received by the legal fraternity. He has contributed research Articles on "Marumakkathayam Law" and "Christian Law" in the International Encyclopedia on Legal History published by the Oxford University. He has also to his credit several research articles published in law journals. He was a Part- time Lecturer in Govt. Law College, Ernakulam and was a member of the Faculty in the Directorate of Training for Munsiff- Magistrates in the High Court of Kerala and a member of the Faculty in the School of Legal Studies, CUSAT and the National University of Legal Studies and a recognized Guide for Research for the award of Ph.D in Law in the Indian Institute of Law, New Delhi.
